The Willis Polk itinerary includes 44 selected architectural works executed in San Francisco between 1890 and 1932. During the 1890's and the first two decades of the 20th century, the mercurial and multifaceted Polk was one of the most influential architects in San Francisco.
After a brief stint in the A. Page Brown office, Polk became a leading and often acerbic critic of the turn-of-the-century Victorian confections of the City's establishment architects. He advocated an ecclectic philosophy of design rooted in Beaux Arts principles, respectful of local vernacular precedents and integrated with the inherent natural beauty of Bay Area regional geography.
His innovative early residential works are hallmarks of the first phase of the Bay Area Tradition and his surviving commercial designs are among the oldest and most representative buildings in San Francisco's Financial District.
